What is Stress?

Stress is a highly subjective topic that is not easy to define. In general terms it is defined as the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change. Many people have different ideas about what stress actually means. Most people believe stress is something that is negative and unpleasant. This kind of stress is actually distress. Distress is a negative emotion that most people try to avoid, but there is also a good kind of stress called eustress.

Eustress is a helpful agent in the body that calls attention to a given task and sets you up for optimal functioning. Distress means that the body’s resources are becoming over-burdened and they haven’t had enough time to rest and replenish themselves.

The key to managing stress is to clearly identify the type of stress you are experiencing and establish strategies and habits to manage distress and thrive with eustress.

What are the symptoms?


The symptoms of stress are many and diverse. Some examples are: tight muscles, cold or sweaty hands, headaches, back of neck tension, sleep disturbance, stomach distress, fatigue, pounding heart and so many more.
